The hypothesis suggesting planetary intelligence, a concept proposed by astrobiologists, challenges traditional views by positing that planets, including Earth, exhibit a form of intelligence. This speculative idea stems from the collective impact of life, such as microorganisms and plants, leading to transformative changes that grant planets a unique, self-sustaining existence.

Published in the International Journal of Astrobiology, the research establishes a framework for evaluating a planet's intelligence, conceptualized as "cognitive activity" and knowledge operating on a planetary scale. This perspective broadens the traditional understanding of intelligence beyond sentient beings, encompassing the cumulative impact of life processes on a global scale.

The researchers emphasize that planetary intelligence is measured by the capacity of life on a planet to sustain itself perpetually. Despite the recognition of individual and collective intelligence in various forms, the study highlights the challenge of humans communally responding in the best interests of the planet. The impact of human activities is reframed as events happening to the planet rather than merely on it, highlighting the profound interconnectedness between human actions and the planet's well-being.

The theory introduces the notion of Earth having intelligent life, but lacking "planetary intelligence." The planet is described as being in an

"immature technosphere" stage, where technological activities are developed but not harmoniously integrated with the environment. The integration of biological and technological processes is deemed crucial for ensuring productivity and securing humanity's future on Earth.

The researchers propose that true planetary intelligence would involve steering the future evolution of Earth in harmony with planetary systems, guided by a deep understanding of these systems. This radical interpretation of planetary intelligence suggests that considering physical nature as intelligent beings could lead to more mindful human actions.

In essence, the hypothesis encourages a profound shift in perspective, uniting the imperative to address the climate crisis with the broader implications of life and intelligence evolving on any planet. This line of inquiry prompts contemplation of the interconnectedness between human behavior, the environment, and the potential for a planet to possess a mind of its own.
